The designer that created the iconic, versatile and memorable “Ghostbusters” logo has passed away. You can read about his storied life of design in the recent NY Times article here. Aside from being so cute and full of impact, this logo is actually a very usable and reproducible, two qualities that we here at BusinessLogos are always harping on. It is done in two color, or max three if you count the white, the edges are crisp, no gradients or effects, and importantly it is readable at a very small size. Excellent logo for for the ages!
Also all over the news is the icon that swept the world in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks last week. Aside from being perhaps a perfect visual concept for an icon in this context, the logo is also done in natural, humanistic charcoal or grease pen in a spontaneous way. This is decidedly a human response, visually and conceptually accessible to even a small child. The entire world has rallied around Paris using this icon, as show here at a gathering in Hong Cong, on CNN.
This phenomenon reminds us of the now canonical (and also hand drawn) “Solidarnost” logo design that symbolized the Polish opposition to Soviet Rule just before the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. There is something about a hand drawn or painted expression that draws people together.
Last but not least, and on a lighter note, we have the Buick logo poll by GM! They want to know how many people prefer the multi colored logo, or the monochrome look. You can take the poll here.
We will say the simpler look speaks to luxury and high quality. Getting into the actual sculptural quality of the logo on the car itself as pictured, the slight bevels in the cross bars across the shields also denotes high precision. If we think of the two most luxury/precision car brands we think of Mercedes Benz and Lexus, or perhaps Acura; all of their logos are one color, all chrome expressions. In the end it will also depend on which market segment Buick is going for with the new cars.
